One day after her 15th birthday, Maddie was diagnosed with neuroendocrine carcinoma at the base of her tongue. Two years of chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and complications involving an emergency tracheotomy have taught her lessons of how to live life to the fullest. The first doctors she spoke with declared that she would never be able to speak again, but speech therapy and plenty of hard work allow her to lead a mostly “normal” life. She happily celebrated her two-year cancer-free anniversary in 2009 and will attend the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the fall, majoring in the fields of Radiation Technology or Psychology.
